There are days that nothing seems to happen. Work and pleasure seem to be in a stand still. Nothing is moving and there’s nothing that can be done to fix the situation. Even when there are places full of ideas and starting places for new things. People could go and occupy themselves with small changes, but does that really help or is he/she just playing time to “get the ball rolling” again?
The reality is that the most days are dull and full of dull things, but that is all an illusion. Even when the situation is not moving in a pace that can be caught by the eye, it doesn’t mean that there isn’t movement. The only thing that matters is the direction, not the speed. Everyone has their own speed of doing things, but if the goal is set and the things done move the person towards the goal, it’s all good. It’s when there are very little movement and that movement is in the wrong direction, the person is in trouble.
The movement can be clear by doing things like going to the gym or cleaning the yard, but there is movement that can’t be seen with eyes or felt with fingers – mental movement. Many big things start with a good plan and thinking before doing, and with that there can be very little physical things to show. How much is too much then? There are Buddhist monks who spend a lot of time doing mental work to achieve the ultimate goal of nirvana. Is meditating the same as moving?
The ordinary days are good for reflecting where are you on the road towards the goal and have you side stepped or stayed on the correct path. The trick is; how do you know that you are indeed in the correct path? Well, the simple answer is: you can’t know. That what makes the mystery of life so interesting – not knowing. People decide their actions based on the information available at that time.
Ordinary, may have an bad echo, as it is not special or something to look forward to. But the ordinary is the “bread and butter” that makes the largest piece of a person\’s life. People don’t give ordinary days enough merit, as the “special days” like achieving a goal or winning in a lottery, make a bigger imprint on the person\’s mind. For example, do you, my dear reader, remember what happened on the ordinary days before you finally landed that big job or saw a movie that you have waited for a long time?
This article is named “The ordinary days”, because there should be more emphasis on the days that nothing big is happening because all your days are worth being lived. As mentioned before in this text, the only important aspect is the direction. Everything else is secondary.
